Baxter Arena

The Baxter Arena is a newly opened sports and entertainment arena in Omaha, Nebraska that is owned and administered by the University of Nebraska Omaha. Baxter Arena was opened in 2015 and called the home of the university's sports teams, commonly referred to as the Omaha Mavericks. It can also be used for other events, including concerts, family entertainment, and community activities. The arena has a seating capacity of 9,500 people. It was funded by a public-private partnership, with 72% of the construction costs coming from private donations. The arena has been praised for its unique design and its impact on the local economy.

Due to rising maintenance costs, Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle announced in 2012 that the Omaha Civic Auditorium would be closed in 2014. The loss of the Auditorium would have a substantial impact on the Mavericks ice hockey team, which relies on a mid-sized indoor venue. At the time, the city's principal indoor facility, CenturyLink Center Omaha, hosted home games for the club, but it often rehearsed there. One of the few NCAA Division I hockey programs without its own practice facilities already has. To make matters worse, a lot of people thought the 14,000-seat CenturyLink Center was too big to host the hockey team.

As a result, the University of New Orleans began developing plans for a new arena, selecting a spot within Aksarben Village, which has been increasingly integrated with the University of New Orleans campus in recent years. University of Nebraska Board of Regents voted in favor of the arena on March 15, 2013, It was supposed to cost $75 million, but the final bill came to $81.6 million instead. UNO announced in June 2015 that Baxter Auto, an Omaha-area consortium of car dealerships, had purchased the naming rights for $400,000 a year for ten years, which was nearly half of the total cost.
