Joslyn Castle

Joslyn Castle

Near the center of Omaha, Nebraska, Joslyn Castle overlooks the city from its perch on a hill. The castle was once home to Cornhusker banker and art collector George Joslyn and his family. After Mr. Joslyn's death, his wife donated the castle and its surrounding gardens to the City of Omaha. Today, Joslyn Castle is open to the public and is a popular tourist destination in Omaha. Visitors can explore the inside of the castle as well as wander through the beautiful gardens that surround it.

One of the most charitable couples in American history, George and Sarah Joslyn, were the first residents of the Joslyn Castle and Gardens. Possession of tremendous riches, according to the Joslyn family, "involves an enormous amount of trust and responsibility." George and Sarah Joslyn's historic home, Joslyn Castle, is preserved through stewardship and cultural programming that educates and inspires the community. The Scottish Baronial-style castle was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 as a result of its significance. And in 1979, the building was recognized as historic.

The 35-room Scottish Baronial estate built by George and Sarah Joslyn in 1903 on Omaha's outskirts was one of Nebraska's finest mansions. At a cost of $250,000, the four-story house was completed—about $7 million in today's currencies. Given the abundance of carved wood, stained glass, chiseled stone, mosaic tiles, and wrought iron, the 11-month building period was remarkable. There is a reception hall, a music room, a ballroom, a library, and a golden drawing room in the Castle. A bowling alley used to be located in the basement. The home expanded to 19,360 square feet in 1906 with the addition of a music room. Jens Jensen, a landscape architect, designed the interior of the home's conservatory in 1913. George Joslyn, on the other hand, passed away in 1916 at the age of sixty-five. The 5.5-acre estate was Sarah's home until her death in 1940 when she was 88 years old. The administrative offices of the Omaha Public Schools were stored here from 1944 until 1989. And as a result, a number of changes were made to the Castle, including the installation of a contemporary central heating and cooling system, an elevator, and separate men's and women's bathrooms.

Joslyn Castle & Gardens is a must-see for anyone visiting Omaha. The castle was built in the early 1900s and is now used as a museum. The gardens are absolutely beautiful and perfect for a relaxing afternoon stroll. Since its opening in 1903, the Scottish Baronial home in the heart of Midtown Omaha has enchanted visitors. Admission is free for visitors who wish to explore this Nebraska landmark. The Joslyn Castle tour is open every Sunday at 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm, and 3:00 pm. Every Monday at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. And every Thursday at 2:00 pm. If you want to relax and enjoy stunning scenery, Joslyn Castle & Gardens is definitely worth checking out!
